Whole-Home Generators

Generator Installation & Maintenance

When the power goes out in Northern Illinois — whether from a severe storm, a grid issue, or a utility failure — a whole-home generator is the difference between an inconvenience and a significant disruption. Sump pumps stop running. Medical equipment goes offline. Refrigerators and freezers warm up.

A properly installed standby generator kicks on automatically, runs on natural gas or propane, and keeps your home powered without any action required on your part. Hi-Lite Electric installs and services whole-home generators for homeowners who want reliable backup power.

What We Do

Generator Installation

We install Generac whole-home standby generators — the industry standard for residential backup power. Installation includes all electrical work: the transfer switch, circuit connections, and proper grounding. We coordinate the full installation so the generator, transfer switch, and gas connection all come together as a single functional system.

Automatic Transfer Switches

The transfer switch is what makes a standby generator automatic. When utility power fails, the transfer switch detects the outage and signals the generator to start — typically within seconds. We install automatic transfer switches sized correctly for your generator and your home’s load, so the switchover happens cleanly without manual intervention.

Generator Maintenance

A generator that hasn’t been maintained is a generator you can’t rely on when you need it. We provide maintenance services including inspections, oil changes, and system checks to keep your unit ready to perform. Scheduling regular maintenance also extends equipment life and protects the manufacturer’s warranty.

Battery Installs & Cold Weather Kits

Generator batteries degrade over time, and a weak battery is a common reason for failure to start during an outage. We replace generator batteries and install cold weather kits — including oil and battery heaters — that ensure reliable starting during Northern Illinois winters.
