Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Life Safety Systems

Smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are required by code in most residential occupancies — and the requirements around placement, interconnection, and power source have evolved significantly over the years. Older battery-only detectors scattered through the house are no longer sufficient in many situations, and a home sale or rental inspection can flag deficiencies that cost time and money to correct under deadline. Hi-Lite Electric installs and upgrades life safety systems for homeowners across Northern Illinois.

What We Do

Smoke Detector Installation & Replacement

We install hardwired smoke detectors in code-required locations throughout the home, including interconnected systems where an alarm in one location triggers all detectors simultaneously. For older homes where hardwired detectors were never installed, we run the wiring and bring the system up to current standards.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

CO detectors are required in homes with attached garages, gas appliances, or fuel-burning heating systems. We install hardwired and combination smoke/CO units in the locations required by current code — and we make sure the placement actually makes sense for the layout of your home.

Wireless Smoke & CO Systems

For homes where running new wiring isn’t practical, wireless interconnected smoke and CO systems allow all detectors to communicate without hardwiring. When one alarm triggers, they all sound. We install and configure these systems so they function as a complete, interconnected network — not a collection of independent battery-operated units.

Code Compliance & Real Estate Transactions

Life safety device requirements frequently come up during home sales and rental inspections. If you’ve received a deficiency notice or are preparing a home for sale, we can assess the current system, identify what’s needed, and complete the installation efficiently. Our familiarity with local code requirements means we know what inspectors are looking for.
